All eyes will be on Wrexham this month as the town holds a major disability football tournament.

Wrexham Inclusion FC will host its annual tournament on May 29 at Ysgol Clywedog.

The football club, now in its 11th year, was the first of its kind in the UK and has gone onto inspire other teams across the UK.

Wrexham Inclusion FC supports people from a variety of backgrounds including disability, mental health and social inclusion with the aim of giving everyone a platform to play football regardless of ability.

They set up and play other teams at a variety of levels so there is a level for everyone, providing both children and adults a club to play for.

The tournament which has taken place at TNS FC and Cefn Druids in the past has become a firm favourite on the disability football circuit with teams coming from Jersey, Yorkshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire, Worcestershire and Lancashire in addition to local teams attending.

Carl Austin, Football Project Manager for Wrexham Inclusion FC, said: “We could have made this year’s tournament 3 or 4 times bigger but with that you do lose the quality of the tournament.

“We are delighted to bring the tournament back to Wrexham after four years away due to the pandemic and not having a facility to host us.

“The tournament started back in 2018 and was named after Richard Williams who was a player and sadly passed away in 2017.

“The last few years have been tough and the pandemic meant we couldn’t run the football club as we would want to, so to get back playing and bringing people to our fantastic town is a great feeling.

“It’s a platform for acceptance, togetherness, solidarity and team work.cFor a day – these players can become hero’s and be cheered on to success

“We get the opportunity to showcase this once a year and give people the opportunity to come and see how special these events can actually be.”

The Disability Football Tournament will take place at Ysgol Clywedog on May 29.
