A Wrexham-based hospice has welcomed patients into its newly modernised Inpatient Unit.

Staff, volunteers, and trustees at Nightingale House were delighted to get the first glimpses of the new facility at the handover from Read Construction, who, along with TACP and many other sub-contractors, have been working tirelessly to complete the building work since April 2023.

The local hospice was busy over the festive period ahead of welcoming patients into the new Inpatient Unit at Nightingale House Hospice on 3 January.

“It’s like being a kid at Christmas, we’ve all been waiting so long to see the new Inpatient Unit,” said senior nurse, Julie Lloyd said:

“It looks absolutely fabulous! Knowing we are going to care for patients in this environment, I am so proud to work here.”

Health Care Support Worker, Michelle Constantine added: “Everyone is quite emotional about the new Inpatient Unit.

“It looks even better than we ever imagined.

“Many patients and their families comment on how we provide a high standard of care and attention, and now we have the environment and facilities to match.”

Read Construction has worked with Nightingale House Hospice across all four phases of their modernisation plan, which started in April 2023.

Chair of the Board of Trustees at Nightingale House, Eluned Griffiths, said: “The Board of Trustees are delighted with the successful completion of Nightingale House’s new Inpatient Unit, accomplished within the projected timeframe and budget.

“I want to express my sincere thanks to all involved: Reads Construction, MKG Advisory, SP Projects, TACP and the staff at Nightingale House who played a key role in leading this project.

“We have been able to deliver an exceptional, state-of-the-art facility for local families.

“This facility will provide invaluable care for patients in the local community with palliative or life-limiting conditions for many years.”

The staff at Read Construction have also helped to raise money for Nightingale House Hospice through various activities.

Their efforts have helped to raise over £5,000 – as well as refurbishing the clinical staff toilet area, which was not included in the modernisation plans free of charge with the help of HFS (Hygienic finishing systems), B J Watts Flooring, Cabik, DR Electrical, JRS Mechanical and Focus Décor.

Read Construction Contracts Manager, Damian Bryan said: “Working with Nightingale House Hospice on their modernisation programme over the past few years has been fantastic.

“We are really pleased that we could be part of such an important project, creating a modern, welcoming, first-class environment for the local community to be cared for in their time of need.

“When we were asked if we would be able to support sorting the Nurse’s facilities, too, we were more than happy to help.

“Our subcontractors were also eager to get involved. We want to thank our subcontractors who donated their time, expertise, and resources to make this happen.”

Donations from the public have helped Nightingale House Hospice fund the modernisation of their Inpatient Unit.

Laura Hughes, ward manager, said: “We are all in awe of how the public continues to support our appeal and have raised an incredible amount of money so far, but it just keeps going up, and the funds are still very much needed to complete the finishing touches.

“The new facilities will allow us to care for patients long into the future.”
