A Wrexham-based micro-brewery has won big at the prestigious SIBA Wales & West Independent Beer Awards

Magic Dragon Brewing took home 10 awards at the awards, which took place at Ludlow’s Spring Fair at Ludlow Castle.

Winners include the Border Bitter which won gold in Keg British ales (up to 6.4%abv), Black Tiger a Black IPA won Gold in Specialty IPA category whilst the Old Magic dark mild and Green One in cask both won a silver award.

Nectaron and Hoppy Jester in cask won Bronze. Nectaron in keg won Silver and Dr G won Bronze. Finally, Eyton Gold in bottle won Bronze.

The SIBA Wales & West Independent Beer Awards judge a huge range of beers across a number of styles in separate cask, keg, and bottle and can competitions.

Winners from the regional awards will move forwards to the National Finals in March 2025.

That means that Black Tiger and Border Bitter will go to the final competition at Beer X.

Magic Dragon Brewing, which was started in 2019 by Richard and Liz Lever, is based at The Plassey Holiday Park just outside Wrexham.

They have two bars, one in Wrexham city centre and the other, The Crafty Dragon, opened in Whitchurch at the end of February.

Richard Lever said: “It’s fantastic to win so many awards out of the large number of beers entered into the competition and we’re really looking forward to going to the national awards with the Keg Border Bitter and Black Tiger.

“It’s been an exciting year so far with the opening of our new bar in Whitchurch and now these awards.”

Neil Walker, SIBA Head of Comms & Marketing, added: “The SIBA Independent Beer Awards seek to highlight the very best beers in the Uk in a huge range of styles, strengths and flavours, from traditional bitters and stouts to modern hazy IPAs, Pale Ales and a variety of specialty and international styles.

“Judged by beer experts, experienced beer judges, and fellow brewers from other regions – they are seen very much as the ‘brewers’ choice awards’ in the UK and I’d like to congratulate all of today’s winners for taking home a medal against tough competition.”
