Heavy Rain Forecast as ‘Storm Frank’ Set to Hit Region

Heavy rainfall and the chance of localised flooding in some parts are forecast this evening – with ‘Storm Frank’ set to hit the region.

Storm Frank is set to hit the region this evening – with a yellow weather warning in place from 7pm. The Met Office state that the yellow weather warning for rain is in place until 3pm tomorrow afternoon.

A statement released today by the Met Office reads: “A band of rain, often heavy, will affect Northern Ireland during Tuesday evening, before spreading east across Scotland, Wales and northern and western parts of England during Tuesday night and Wednesday. Rain will be heaviest and most persistent over higher ground.

“A cold front will move east across western parts of the UK during Tuesday night and Wednesday, with an associated strong, moist southwesterly airflow. Rainfall accumulations through this period are expected to be widely 20-40 mm, with 60 mm or more over some higher ground.”

The forecast follows a weekend of heavy rain, which resulted in flooding across parts of Bangor-on-Dee and Holt / Farndon. Flood warnings remain in place at Lower Dee Valley from Llangollen to Trevalyn Meadows, with localised flooded expected – however river levels at Farndon have reduced.

Advice issued by Natural Resources Wales today states: “We are advising people to take care on the roads as driving conditions may be difficult and also asking people to take care near fast-flowing and swollen rivers. People are advised to keep an eye on local news and weather forecasts for news of any disruption in their area, and are reminded of the dangers of driving through flood water.”
