I’m very much looking forward to this but would be more so if there were more local producers taking part – which I thought was kind of the point. I’ve spoken to a couple of producers who have attended in the past who’ve said they won’t be this year due to the expense.

Looking through the list of loacl producers and outlets listed on localfoodfirst.com I can only only see 3 who are listed as exhibiting next weekend.

To rub salt in to the wound, the Welsh goverment have donated a rather pityful £7,500 to ‘help raise awareness of the high quality of food and drink on offer in Wales’.

I posted a while back about publishing a manifesto for the DEMOCRATIC PARTY FOR PROSPERITY for Wrexham.

If those interested jointly drew this up, would enough seriously intending candidates put themselves forward for election?

An alternative is some form of residents action group. Whether there are enough people left with sufficient time and determination I’m not sure.. and would the council recognise them.

What is always frustrating for me is the lack of any visible coherent plan for the town, something that has been mentioned on other threads. That’s pretty clear when you walk around the town as the result is inappropriate outlets popping up randomly which creates a feeling that nobody really is in charge.

Wayne mentions us voters being partly responsible but I’m pretty sure none us had the opportunity of voting for the town centre manager Isobel Watson nor Amanda Davies, Wrexham Council’s marketing and promotions manager.

The latter you may recall made the remarkable decision to ignore hugely positive public feedback by not continuing with the hugely successful Victorian market. She did however give the green light to the Wrexham Beach despite many councillors receiving pretty strong objections from the public..

I apologise if I offended you or any other commuters, but that was not my intention. What I am trying to point out is the active encouragement of migration of people to the Wrexham area. Natural migration is a good think and creates the diverse mix of people we have in Wrexham. However, in Wrexham I am concerned at the current over-development, the effects of which we can already see with traffic and pressure on services like hospitals. We do not have the infrastructure to support the housing targets being set down by the Welsh government. The active seeking of people to move from other places can only put these services under greater pressure

I am also concerned that Wrexham is forced to do this because of a lack of will to build the necessary housing in Cheshire etc so people do not have to commute. Surely not commuting is better for health and the environment. The current plans are not sustainable, a buzzword which the government uses a lot in its planning policy Wales document, but does not follow. Similarly, they are actively seeking to bring in skilled people. You can either see this as a good thing to encourage more businesses to come here or it prevents the local workforce in some very deprived areas (which have received European funding) from being able to access these jobs and therefore be lifted out of a circle of poverty.

No offence taken at all. “Commuter” town is often waved around as a doom laden prophecy (quite often by Plaid) which is a little silly considering how many of us natives commute 10, 15, 20 miles every day.

With the new LDP coming in Wrexham in the near future I can see a lot of people getting angry over the buildings that will begin appearing on greenfield sites near them. This is all because of the Welsh Government Plan to turn Wrexham into a ‘Hub’. This seems to basically involve attracting workers from England to come and live here meaning we are building houses not just for locals but for ‘in-migration’ as they put it; basically commuters from West Cheshire and Merseyside.

What’s your concern with people moving here whilst commuting elsewhere? I live in Wrexham but commute outside to work. Should I move?

Just an update on this – its due to be a ‘Real China’ restaurant Chinese Restaurant Coming To Eagles Meadow | Wrexham.com

Leaving aside the issues about location and planning etc, the arrival of Majestics and now Real China is some positive news. The fact that two national/semi-national chains, other than low end budget outlets, believe they can run successfully here can only be a good thing..

I have always wondered why there were no food stalls in the People’s Market. I like the Country Market stall and have followed them to different places around the town.

I’ve often wondered if the Country Market sold anything of interest as I’ve never been as I’m in work. Same old problem.

Personally I’d love to see occasional evening markets such as the Victorian one last December which was a huge success. Perhaps a periodic evening economy is a niche that could be exploited more generally.
Priority would have to be an extensive refurbishment of the Central Arcade, butchers and general markets. Wouldn’t it be nice to feel proud when glancing at our heritage..

wow now that’s a pile of rubbish

a QR code is 3D barcode, it can hold as much information as a book, where as a normalbarcode is very limited in what it can hold, many smart phones can read QR codes, and thus you scan a building, and you get a map and information

they are used poorly by firms who don’t realise just how much they can do, and of course ay say idiots like the above user who things progress is a gimmick,

QR for wrexham would be ideal as navigation, I’ve often been asked directions near the general train station, where is the hospital, which way to the shops, and indeed once outside a shut burger king and a shut M&S where are the shops

I’m launching a virtual , rancid tomato at you right this moment..

Pride hill has closed down shops, as does the darwyn centre, it’s mostly discount stores and empty lots now, it’s not like it was, but yes it’s all central.

I’d also agree that the central parts of Shrewsbury are indeed quite central. Fortunately Shrewsbury also has a thriving and expanding indepdent sector across its outskirts from the English bridge, Wyle cop, Dogpole, Milk street, Princess street, Market street even across the river to Frankwell where I’ve noticed a few new bistros open up. Amazing they can survive so far from M&S.

Interesting you mention Pride hill however as I’d heard there is a planned multi £m (£150m rings a bell) development of this area all the way down to Mardol.

Lets’s see what nuggets of wisdom our council come up with at this weeks strategy meeting for markets. Perhaps some strategically placed QR codes with links to how it used to look when people cared.. (Seriously I will be taking a bag of rotten tomatoes to hurl in the event somebody mentions QR codes to promote tourism).

Good opinion there Adam. I bet you’ll get a real show of hands on the location of EM. It might be the centre of the Borough (?), it might be the centre of the Town (?) but the idea that it has been placed within the Town’s shopping centre is not an opinion, it’s a joke. That said, it probably does represent the centre now

Otherwise, I agree with what you have to say (and usually do):)

Probably would be a bit silly to claim EM was built in the centre of town, good job I didn’t.

The bottom line is this: My partner and I work full time. We buy pretty much everything we need from the supermarkets (sorry) and a little online (sorry again). We have evenings and weekends (with family in tow) for casual shopping for items we want. Perhaps a circumstance familiar to others on here.

What frustrates me is that Wrexham town centre falls some way short (EM included to an extent) of providing attractive, pleasant, civilised places to shop, eat and generally socialise during these time constraints. I don’t want to have to drive to the Pant for a good meal or a quiet drink when we can walk to the town centre in 15 mins. Yes I know, before anybody starts, many people here are more than happy with a £5 carvery at the Wynnstay or a 2-4-1 at Yates. That’s great, fill your boots. You are more than well catered for. I’d just like a bit of balance for those of us who want a bit more.

Fundamentally Alan I’m warmed by the fact that we seem to agree that we want to see change and that can only come about with the council, local traders, forums, shoppers, indeed anyone who has an interest in the town’s future, working together and understanding each other. Simple, right? :)
