Good to see the Council are going to revamp the Butchers and General Market, they are one of the unique selling points that make Wrexham different from Anytown.

Yes I agree entirely, over the years they have knocked down anything good in Wrexham and concentrated on the wrong things for Wrexham.. City Status, Glyndwr University, Bus Station come immediately to mind out of many.. So Well done for a change. :)

The proposed refurbishments would include the removal of vegetation, isolated areas of masonry cleaning and ‘general works to de-clutter the buildings facades’.

It is also proposed that shop fronts are also redecorated with new signage installed.

I’d have thought that the above should already be part of the on-going maintenance plan which traders no doubt contribute towards through their rents..

I am also in favour of the revamp of the markets, providing they carry out what they say.Around 2005, planning permission was obtained to revamp the Henblas Street entrance to the Butchers Market. The shop to the side of the doors was not let because of the intended work,,reducing the Council income, the Café stallholder was informed that some of the Café space would be temporarily required to carry out the refurb, but that alternative accommodation would be provided. The work was never started, and no reason given. So I hope that this programme of work does go ahead and enhance the visitor appeal of the town centre.

Key to any of these ideas to refurbish will be are there sufficient traders to go in there, will the rents go up to pay for the refurb.
Has someone also forgotten that there are three markets in Wrexham– in the Peoples Market the stallholders have been told they can spread out to the next door stalls to make the place look full.
The Council have said about the possibility of moving the Oriel Gallery from the Library to the Peoples Market — I wonder who has looked at the profile of the users in both places they are poles apart..
Why not move the Gallery to a far more interesting building which has features — the Butter Market — this would be far more of quaint surrounding with character compared withe Peoples Market which is really the ground floor of a multi storey car park.

What would you do with the Tenants of the Butter Market? If you had established your business in there over a number of years, would you agree to move out.

If you look at the empty capacity you could reduce the Market down to two so there could be a win win by having a concentrated footfall

If the stallholders in all three markets agreed with this and only if, I could go along with that. At least then it would be authentic. The peoples market could complete the car park. The Home Bargains complex is more like an out of town development anyway so that wouldn’t be affected.

This is separate to the planning application mentioned above – and is worth a read!

    https://www.wrexham.com/news/3-million-wrexham-markets-overhaul-plan-unveiled-42379.html

    Options summary are:

-Reduce the market operation in the People’s Market and introduce a cultural and arts based operation into the vacant space at an estimated capital cost of £1.4m
-Retain the Butchers’ Market as a market and make capital investment of £890k
-Refocus the General Market to provide restaurants and bars with a capital investment of £729k, creating a venue for the day time economy as well as further developing the evening economy.
