A dad from New Broughton has stepped up to the plate to raise funds for Nightingale House by walking the equivalent of Snowdon – four times.

Alex Williams, set himself a target to walk 47 steps over 460 times during a twelve-hour period in memory of his father David Williams, who was cared for at the Wrexham hospice and passed away in 2020.

He wanted to recognise the 166,000 deaths from cancer in the UK and set himself a target of £1,666 to raise vital funds for Nightingale House and patients with life-limiting illnesses.

His target was smashed, raising over £4,000 in his father’s memory when the fundraiser was live streamed on social media.

Alex said the challenge was tough, very painful at the end but well worth it. “I will forever be indebted to their support which allowed me and my sisters to spend quality time before he passed.

“I will remember with great fondness the refresher ice lollies my dad was able to have anytime, day or night, but most of all the compassion and understanding shown to him and us as a family up to and beyond the end of his life.”

He added: “Doing the Stairway To Heaven challenge was tough, very painful at the end but well worth it.

“I want to say a huge thanks to all my supporters and special thanks to my sister Vicky, my partner Jemma, daughter Isabella, Galaxium for their extremely generous match funding donation and to James from Maverick Live for his support with live streaming the event.”

Bethan Scott, challenge events Coordinator at Nightingale House said: “To witness the effort Alex went to in completing this challenge was nothing short of incredible. Alex is an inspirational young man who should feel extremely proud of what he has achieved. Thank you Alex, from everyone at Nightingale House Hospice.”
