JaneJParticipantWhist I appreciate the two new found American friends of Wrexham have done a great deal to put Wrexham on the map by buying the Football Club it does not seem appropriate that two Directors of a Private Company should be awarded the highest recognition in Wrexham.
It should also be noted that only about 10% of the population of Wrexham City actually go to watch a game.If the Council go down the route of recognising private business what about all those fantastic companies on Wrexham Industrial estate that employ 1000s of people giving them a wage for many to then watch football- home grown business such as Village Bakery with its National International Trade, Alex from NetSport, JCB to name a few and the multi million pond investments they have made in the area (incidentally far more than the number of US Dollers).
This proposal should be killed dead asap or under the Councils own Equalities Policy they will have 100s of names being put forward.

wrexviewParticipantSee the Liverpool football manager, Klopp has been given the Freedom of the City of Liverpool today. They have been quite a successful team, but the award has gone to the manager not the owner.

WreX-iTParticipantJane, please don’t be a killjoy!
Wrexham’s attendance averages is around 9,914, so 7% of the population go to the games using your system but how many follow Wrexham? Two different things and something that Rob and Ryan have promoted on a global scale.
When people in America watch Wrexham games on ESPN+ and when you go away and say you are from Wales, they ask if you are near Wrexham .. thats quite something.
They are to be honoured for what they have and continue to do for Wrexham, not in a business sense but because people are dreaming again and looking forward to a brighter future, despite all the crap that goes on in daily life.
The businesses you listed aren’t here to give us all jobs, they are here to make a profit but i am interested in the “multi million pond investments” because wildlife needs looking after too.
So lets show R&R some love and embrace the journey.
PS you are more likely to see Rob or Ryan in town than Sarah Atherton-Athletic or Simon WhatsHisName, unless of course they are courting your votes.

Born AcornParticipantI’d probably watch the documentary, Jane. Though the main focus is the club it has a lot of focus on the town and the country which is why this is happening.
It has people talking about Wrexham from Anchorage to Woolloomooloo, I don’t see any of your other examples doing that.

parkingmadParticipantTwo Conservative councillors voted against it, because of derogatory remarks by certain.

JaneJParticipantThe statement by Conservative High Jones had two strands of objections – the derogatory comments but also about the wide range of other organizations and individuals who on past merit would deserve the honour.
One of the amazing things in the statement was the acknowledgement of the work of The Venture as in the past he has not supported their work due to being run by Labour Councilor Malcolm King.

parkingmadParticipantSome councillors didn’t turn up, I heard some asked for tickets for the Notts County game.

wrexviewParticipantI am surprised by the very low key event held by the Council.Bestowing the Freedom of the City is a rare event and one to be celebrated by both the people of Wrexham and the recipients. Doing it only behind closed doors does not sit well with the ideal of Freedom. Normally this honour would be done at a Full Council Meeting with the Mace and Mayor present. Councillors would be dressed for such event , as would the recipients. The football shirts on Councillors and anoraks on recipients gave the impression of an everyday event , rather than something very special. Such a pity the public were not allowed to be part of the event. The Council have missed an opportunity to promote the city in the best possible way, open and inclusive.

JaneJParticipantPerhaps the Officers and Executive of the Council should have typed into ChatBot to see about the Freedom of the City event. It would be a lot cheaper for the ratepayers of Wrexham if Chatbot was asked the questions!!
The Freedom of the Borough of Wrexham ceremony is typically open to the public, and anyone can attend. However, it is worth noting that due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, there may be restrictions on public gatherings and events, and attendance at the ceremony may be limited. Therefore, it is advisable to check with the Wrexham County Borough Council or the relevant authorities for the most up-to-date information regarding attendance at the ceremony. Additionally, some ceremonies may require tickets or invitations, so it’s best to check with the Council to ensure that you have all the necessary information before attending the ceremony.

wrexviewParticipantDo the Council still have any covid restrictions? An outdoors balcony appearance would have been fine . Later that same day nearly 10,000 people gathered to see the same people plus some footballers outdoors, with no problems.
