A Community Council in Wrexham is to take over a disused plot of land to create garden and allotment space for the local area.

During this month’s Executive Board meeting, members unanimously backed proposals to lease vacant land off Hampden Way, Rhosymedre, to Cefn Community Council.

The Community Council will form a partnership between the Community Council, Dee Valley Trust and Rhosymedre & District Garden Association – with the vacant space set to be converted into community garden and allotment space for the local area.

Cefn Community Council will lease the land off Wrexham Council for 25 years.

Last week Wrexham.com reported on the recommendation to hand over the running of the land to Cefn Community Council, with the Executive Board report stating: “The location of the community garden has been chosen as it is convenient to a significant population in the south of Wrexham which can be easily accessed by walking or cycling. The site is also easily accessible by bus and the area has a frequent bus service.

“As part of the business plan the group propose to apply for grant funding to create off-site car parking on the grassed area to the rear of Druids House off Hampden Way.

“The car park area will not form part of the lease and the Council will not be responsible for the maintenance of that car park. The local member and housing department whose portfolio the land is held are supportive of the extension of the car park.”

Speaking in support of the recommendations, Cllr David Bithell said: “Community gardens are popular throughout the County. The Council have been very supportive of these types of projects over the years.

“If we support the recommendations today it will be successful.”
