My daughter has sort of half expressed an interest in this but, realistically, what type of person is Councillor a good option for? Is it enough money as a job in its own right or is it a part time “second job”. Seems to me that it’s more a “semi-retirement” job to supplement a pension and give them something to do. Or have I got this wrong?

    Hope it’s John Lewis.

This must be the best kept worst kept secret

I spoke to someone on the Council, he said that they are pleasantly surprised how few valid objections (many were submitted wrongly, in the wrong place, etc) there have been on the LDP and they feel that this shows how the public broadly supports their “direction of travel” (his words). They were surprised that even some of the larger developments (e.g. Gatewen Road) received relatively few objections. Also, many of the objections which were submitted were of a “NIMBY” nature, which will be treated with less credence.

Yeah it’s horribly user unfriendly – took me ages to work out how to put in a comment. Most people either won’t be able to or will give up then the Council will declare triumphantly that there were few objections to their plan. Comments sent by email, letter or other means are not valid.

It’s not a zero tolerance approach – I saw a gang of youths deliberately dropping litter in front of a Kingdom officer and laughing, and the officer didn’t do anything.

Once the gang dispersed however, an old dear dropped a tissue whilst retrieving something from her pocket and, was pounced on straightaway by the Officer!

So, not sure what their policy is.

“There is £5bn earmarked over the next 15 years for the Metro, to improve public transport across the south Wales region and includes taking over control from Network Rail and upgrading the Valleys lines.”

    What nothing for North Wales.

Not directly, no. The South Wales network is higher priority at the moment as the article explains:

“Complaints about overcrowding, particularly on the Valleys lines, and the decades old rolling stock”

But I have read elsewhere that when the South Wales Metro get their new state of the art trains, some of their existing fleet could be repurposed and used up here.

Second class North Wales not considered a priority as always. Oh but don’t worry we might get promised some hand-me-downs.

Surely when awarding the franchise they should have considered a bid that actually took a holistic Wales view & had provisions for improving links between North-South and also the proposed North Wales Metro system.[/quote]

The decision makers for awarding the new franchise probably have little need to travel up to or around North Wales so that wouldn’t have been a big selling point for the bidders.

Wrexham is known in the wider region as “the place to be” for these types. And it’s easy to see why…

The public is especially tolerant – look on any Wrexham Facebook Group and you see a lot of sympathy with them. Any empty building and there are immediate calls to turn it into more accommodation for homeless drug addicts (as per the opening post here) In other places they are not regarded as fondly.

Tolerance also by the “powers that be” – they are largely left to it by the police and were also allowed to camp by the Groves relatively unhindered. Other areas have a “zero tolerance” approach to these poor individuals.

A number of unofficial charities set up to provide things like food, clothes and other essentials, meaning that they can spend their benefits on “a bit of what they fancy” (drugs, alcohol etc). Public donations also help with this.

Excellent support services in the town – a real “one stop shop”. Sadly in other towns and cities in the region these have either been moved out of town or closed altogether due to public services cuts, or to keep things like libraries or youth clubs open.

Whilst the potential development is great news, are the two necessarily mutually exclusive? If you’re going to spend that much money, it wouldn’t hurt to put a multi storey on there. A lot of people who go to the hospital are ill, disabled or old.
