Return of Post Office services in Ruabon welcomed by community leaders
News that Post Office services will return to a local village has been welcomed by community leaders.
Last week Wrexham.com reported that the Post Office had confirmed it would reopen in Ruabon, at Ruabon Discount Stores, in August 2023.
The future of the facility was thrown into doubt last year after it was announced that McColl’s, on Ruabon High Street, was to close.
McColl’s, which housed the village’s only Post Office counter, was among the company’s 1,164 branches taken over by Morrisons.
But the supermarket giant identified 132 loss-making stores to shut for good – which included Ruabon.
Following the announcement last year that McColl’s would close, local Member of the Senedd Ken Skates and Labour group leader, councillor Dana Davies called on the the Post Office to press for counter services to be retained in the village.
After a review of the area the company confirmed it was advertising for a new premises, and later said it had received a number of applications.
Welcoming the announcement, Mr Skates said: “This is very welcome news. Dana and I shared the concerns of many local residents when the closure of the existing branch was announced, but I’m glad that the Post Office has listened to those concerns and have been able to find a suitable location.
“It will be fantastic to have a branch back in Ruabon, and I hope local people will get behind it.”
Cllr Davies added: “It’s an ideal location, right in the middle of the village and with parking on the doorstep.
“While we weren’t able to persuade the company which operated the cashpoint to find a new location for it, I’m grateful that the Post Office quickly committed to retaining a branch in Ruabon.
“I wish Steve and the team the best of luck – I’m sure they’ll make a success of it.”
Shop owner Steve Ithell said two former McColl’s employees have been taken on.
The Post Office said customers will be able to access services at the retail counter.
This will restore services with a Post Office counter alongside the existing retail counter of the general household retail store from Friday 11 August at 1pm.
The Post Office opening hours will be: Monday to Friday: 8am – 6pm; Saturday: 9am – 5.30pm; Sunday: 10am – 4pm.
This will provide 64 hours and 30 minutes of Post Office service a week.
The same range of Post Office products and services will continue to be available.
