New data shows over 65,000 meals have been claimed for locally as part of the ‘Eat Out To Help Out’ scheme, worth nearly £350k.

The data is split on a per-constituency basis and shows a snapshot of claims so far, and does not include claims made by larger chain restaurants.

The data comes with a range of notes, pointing out that registered businesses with more than 25 outlets are not required to provide individual restaurant details, and as a result those claims are not included in the geographic data. The data captures those registered on Thursday 27 August, and some might have deregistered before that date. Values for total number of covers claimed for and total amount of discount claimed have been rounded to the nearest thousand.

Wrexham saw 51 restaurants take part, with 29,000 meals claimed for totalling £164,000 worth of discount paid out so far.

Clwyd South saw 45 restaurants register, with over 36,000 meals claimed for, totally £189,000 worth of discount paid out.

2,957 outlets in Wales were signed up to use the Eat Out to Help Out Scheme as of 27 August, with 2,307,000+ meals claimed for. The total discount for Wales shown in these figures totals £13,056,000 with an average discount per meal of £5.66 .

Llanelli saw the highest average discount per meal (£7.66) compared to Caerphilly’s lowest at £3.80, with Wrexham in the middle with £5.70 average discount and Clwyd South at £5.06 .

Across North Wales 789 restaurants took part, with over 540,000 meals claimed for with a total value of £3.2 million repaid so far.

These figures are set to increase as businesses have until 30th September to make a claim.

Secretary of State for Wales Simon Hart said: “This summer diners all over Wales have enjoyed more than two million discounted meals while protecting the jobs of thousands of people who work in our fantastic hospitality sector. The Eat Out to Help Out scheme has been hugely important in giving businesses and customers alike the confidence to get back to enjoying the best that Wales has to offer.

“It is just one part of the UK Government’s drive to get Wales’ economy moving again which has included supporting more than 500,000 jobs, providing business loans, launching the Kickstart scheme to get young people into work and a VAT cut for the tourism and hospitality sector.”
