Two iconic Christmas films were shown on the big screen last weekend at Wrexham’s drive-in cinema.

In a festive first for the town, the Christmas themed event took place on Waterworld car park on Sunday afternoon and evening – with 115 cars parking up to enjoy popcorn, hot drinks and some classic family films.

The two films which were screened, Elf and Home Alone, were chosen in a tight public vote on the This is Wrexham Facebook page earlier this year.

While it was the first Christmas drive-in cinema, the event followed on from the success of the Valentine’s Day and summer weekend events earlier this year. Both were a sell-out, with organisers deciding to bring some festive cheer to the town centre and host Wrexham’s first Christmas drive-in cinema.

Destination Manager at Wrexham Council, Joe Bickerton explained that there are already plans for three drive-in cinema events in the new year.

Joe said: “We held our third drive-in movie event this year and both films (Elf & Home Alone) were really popular – Elf sold out within a week.

“Overall, there were 115 cars at both showings, but from a tourism point of view – our online sales showed that around 15% travelled from outside of the County demonstrating the wider appeal.

“The format remains popular and the events team are keen to continue them in 2018, with a Valentine’s themed drive-in movie night planned for Sunday 11th February (in town again on the Waterworld Car Park) and others later in the year for Halloween and Christmas again. Details about the Valentine’s cinema will be published in January.”
