“Extremely busy” A&E in Wrexham prompts health board to urge people to access alternative services
Significant pressure on the Emergency Department at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital has lead to the health board to urge people to use alternative options where possible.
A spokesperson for Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board said the department “has to prioritise the most seriously injured patients who need urgent care.”
People are instead being urged, where possible, to access other services over attending the “extremely busy” Emergency Department.
The spokesperson added: “If you or someone you know is poorly but it is not a medical emergency, minor injuries and illnesses can be treated out of hours by:
– contacting the GP Out of Hours Service
– visiting your local Pharmacy, some are open late into the evening
– calling NHS Direct Wales, open 24/7, including for an emergency dental appointment, or;
– contacting the C.A.L.L. helpline 24/7 for anyone concerned about their own mental health or that of a relative or friend
“By choosing the most appropriate health care service for you needs, you will not only be helping your local NHS services during the COVID-19 pandemic, but you might also be seen quicker.
“Information and contact numbers for the services listed above is available on our website.”
Earlier today Wrexham.com reported that the North Wales health board could escalate its response to Covid-19 as pressure on hospitals has increased beyond the predicted level.
Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board said the easing of restrictions had led to more people mixing, with increased admissions to hospitals as a result.
It has also caused delays at emergency departments and in ambulance response times.
