The Groves could be demolished as early as April with a planning application lodged by the Council with itself.

Earlier this month members of Wrexham Council’s Executive Board unanimously approved proposals to develop and clear the former Groves school, with plans to eventually use to the site to develop one or two ‘fit for the 21st century schools’

The planning application, signed off on on Thursday, states that the building needs to be demolished because it is a: “Redundant building being vandalised and unauthorised access being gained – potential risk of injury and fire. Future redevelopment of the site for education purposes.”

Details of how the building will be demolished are also provided – with the process being quite similar to the demolition of the former sports centre and more ‘modern addition’ to the Groves school back in 2013.

The application states: “Hand removal of roof coverings and internal soft strip. Removal of all fixtures and fittings, including windows, doors, rainwater goods, plumbing and heating cases, staircases etc. Mechanical demolition of the structure, slab and foundations, including removal from site.”

Expected demolition for the site is listed as beginning in April 2016, with completion expected by August 2016.

If the demolition goes ahead, Wrexham’s Town Centre skyline is set to change quite significantly, with the town centre police tower also expected to be demolished later this year.

The proposed demolition of the school has been met with fierce of opposition from members of the public and local politicians, who have called for Wrexham Council to reconsider their decision and consult with the public prior to the demolition.

Last week a rare insight into the deterioration and current state of the site was provided by Wrexham History, who were provided with a tour around the former school.

Councillors ‘Call In’ Attempt

However an attempt by some Councillors to ‘call-in’ the decision has been made this evening.

Wrexham’s Liberal Democrat Councillors have requested that the decision to demolish the former Girl’s Grammar School building be reconsidered.

They have submitted call in papers so that the decision can be re-considered. The Lib Dems argue that the decision was taken without sufficient time for the exchange of information and views. They suggest that a public event is organised so that people can give their views.

Local ward councillor and Lib Dem Leader Cllr Carole O’ Toole says: “The public must have the opportunity for their voice to be heard.”

(We have asked Wrexham Council for comment on the application in light of the recent opposition to the decision, and will update as and when a reply is received)
