Mystery Of Three Lost Carnegie Fields
88 years ago the Carnegie UK Trust gave the equivalent of £10million to create, protect and improve playing fields, with three local sites lost through time.
While reading about the Centenary Field announcement this week Wrexham.com found notes about another Fields In Trust campaign, based around ‘Carnegie Fields’. Grants were allocated in the 1930’s with three going to local areas, likely to secure a playing field, tennis court or the like.
Due to records being lost over the years the locations and information on these sites is no longer known, with a national project now trying to recover the information.
Near to Wrexham there are the following unknown Carnegie based grants,
- Wrexham: A grant of £105 was awarded on 6/12/1935. The size, location and owner of the land is unknown.
- Rhos: A grant of £300.00 awarded on 10/03/1933. The size, location and owner of the land is unknown.
- Ruabon: A grant of £60.00 was made on 11/12/1930. The size, location and owner of the land is unknown.
If located it could mean the sites could be eligible for improvement money. Fields In Trust say: “If your playing field is verified as a Carnegie Playing Field and the site is – or can be – legally protected as a public outdoor space, then Fields in Trust will get in touch with you for more information and to give you the opportunity to complete a short application form for one of the £5,000 improvement grants.
“Voluntary groups will be able to make a grant application for a verified Carnegie Field as long as they have a letter of support from the landowner.”
More information can be found on their website here, and if you do have details or possible information on the locations above please drop us an email to [email protected] !
