More assurances have been given over the cleaning over the People’s Market stairwells, with the latest pictures showing ’11 days’ worth of varied waste.

Yesterday Wrexham.com were sent the images featured in this article of litter, ‘human waste’ and ‘drug paraphernalia’ in one of the stairwells of the People’s Market.

We’re told the pictures were taken in the stairwells on the fourth floor of the People’s Market and that the waste had reportedly been there for ’11 days’.

The incident is one of several to have been reported in recent months, with concerns raised previously about the first impression visitors to the area have of the town.  Similar issues were also reported last month, when one shopper contacted Wrexham.com to say they had  discovered a ‘drug den’ in the People’s Market stairwells – with blood, drugs, foil and even human waste found on the floor.

However it is hoped that changes made earlier this month to Wrexham Council’s cleaning services will mean that incidents such as this will become a thing of the past and that the appearance of the stairwells are better maintained.

Cllr Neil Rogers, Lead Member for Economic Development and Regeneration, said: “The sight of human waste and drug paraphernalia is obviously not one which we would wish people to see anywhere in Wrexham, and once this mess on the fourth floor of Stairwell 1 of the Peoples Market was reported, it was cleaned immediately.

“Since April 1st, a new cleaning regime has been in place at the Peoples Market, and the main stairwells not used as fire escapes are cleaned each morning.

“Cleaning staff are doing their best to keep the landings and stairwells as clear as possible, and we want to assure the public that while this was an incident of unsightly waste, incidents such as these will become rarer as the new cleaning routine continues.

He added: “Cleaners have been asked to report any evidence of anti-social behaviour on the stairwells and landings at the Peoples Market.

“We are also keen to tackle incidents of anti-social behaviour throughout Wrexham, and this will also help crack down on incidents such as these.”
