Access & Layout Clarification Issued Regarding Proposed Move of Town Centre Post Office

Further clarification has been provided on what the access and general layout of Wrexham’s Town Centre Post Office would be, should a relocation go ahead.

Last week the Post Office announced that they had launched a six week public consultation regarding a proposed move from their current branch on Henblas Street, to WHSmith on Hope Street.

The announcement prompted concerns online about the lack of shops left in the Henblas Street area and how the overall layout of the new facility could impact some shoppers. The decision has also been ‘slammed’ by Wrexham MP Ian Lucas.

A letter being handed out to customers at the Post Office provides further information into the future plans of the store and what the format would be if the branch later moves into WHSmith.

The letter confirms that the Post Office would move to and operate from the first floor of WHSmith, which has currently been unoccupied for several months. A move which added further fuel to the rumours that the Post Office were looking to eventually relocate to the store.

If the move goes ahead, the branch would continue to be operated by the existing team from the Henblas Street Post Office.

The letter continues onto say: “This move is part of our ongoing modernisation of the network and will allow us to maintain a Crown Post Office in Wrexham while providing a new modern branch for customers from a bright new environment.

“The Post Office operation in Wrexham will remain a Crown Post Office. However we believe the WHSmith store will provide an excellent location for Wrexham’s Town Centre Post Office, which would be known as Wrexham Crown Post Office. The WHSmith retail offer will compliment the wide range of Post Office products and services that will continue to be available following the move.”

One of the main concerns raised when the consultation / proposed move was announced last week, was how the elderly, those with pushchairs, disabilities and mobility issues would be able to access the Post Office upstairs.

Addressing the concerns, the letter continues onto say: “The new branch will operate from a newly built dedicated open plan Post Office area located on the first floor of the WHSmith store, which can be accessed by a customer lift of stairs.

“The lift can carry up up to eight people and can accomodate pushchairs and wheelchairs. However if for any reason customers are unable to access the first floor, alternative arrangements to access Post Office services would be put in place from a designated till point at the ground floor retail counter as required.

“These arrangements would enable customer access to all the services normally available upstairs except for a small number of high value services, such as business banking and foreign currency. Directional signage will be provided from the entrance door through to the new Post Office area.”

The document concludes: “Internally the store already has wide aisles and we will be working with WHSmith to ensure there is sufficient space for Post Office customers, including wheelchair users, so they can easily access the Post Office area and there will be adequate space for our customers.

“There will be five counter serving positions which has been based on current and forecast future business levels; four open plan style positions and one traditional screened position which will also provide travel money services.”

If the consultation is successful, it is anticipated that the move will take place in August.
