MetalheadParticipant^Nimbyism??? Do you honestly think that is why residents are opposed to this application? Unconventional gas extraction has now been banned in fellow European territories such as France, Bulgaria, Germany and it looks as though The Netherlands are about to follow suit. Why would these countries outlaw something which could possibly bolster their flagging economies in these times of austerity? Being against this has nothing to do with Nimbyism, I honestly couldn’t care less what this application may look like (it is only about a mile from my home), I am however fearful of the issues that may arise from it. If these were to occur how exactly would the mess get cleaned up and who will pay? Remember in The Netherlands home insurance companies washed their hands of claims and the government was forced to step in and foot the bill (to the tune of 1.2 Billion Euro’s). If this drill does go ahead then hopefully WCBC has put a couple of billion quid to one side and has a crack team of environmental specialists standing by…

zingerParticipantA lot of people are jumping on a bandwagon on this. Using the deaths of the 265 men & boys who worked below ground to feed their families is not the way to go about it.

It is a Fact that fracking wells can extend horizontally below ground for over 1 mile so that brings the buried miners within range does it not?
planning permission has not been given or even applied for Fracking.

The permission granted is for a test drill for CBM, hydraulic fracturing is usually required during the latter stages of this extraction but you’re correct this would require further permission. Anyone wanting to check out the case histories of these operations will find there is a clear ‘foot in the door’ strategy. ‘Move along… no fracking to see here’, then they carry out a test drill way deeper than they supposed to, find (or not as was the case near Broughton) what they are looking for and then advertise for investors (usually non-UK operations). If they find what they are looking for then the application to frack will come, just as it will now at Ellesmere Port following the results of that test drill. It’s up to the residents of Wrexham whether they want to take the red or blue pill on this one but what’s going on here is nothing new:

Do you really think the people of Wrexham are that stupid, must be the local gene pool I guess:rolleyes:

ChrisParticipantNo I think the professional protesters think the people of Wrexham are stupid.
Wrexham people with their extensive industrial heritage understand that to make an informed decision you have to understand all angles and question all view points. Misinformation often leads to lies when questioned thouroughly.
The profesional protesters have not done their case any good by trying stir up tensions by incorrectly using The Gresford Disaster.
Btw if this company had tried to get planning permission without test drilling they would have been laughed at.December 17, 2014 at 10:30 pm #70744

Test drills are not to assist in getting permission they are to see if there’s anything down there worth extracting. The test drill at Lesters Lane was a dud so it was sealed up and DART moved on, that borehole won’t get touched again now (or monitored for that matter). Looks like they hit the jackpot at Ellesmere Port though and Borras…well they already know CBM is present there, the mining disaster proved that.

IN JUNE shares in Texan oil and gas company Quicksilver Resources Inc were trading at £1.90. Yesterday they were languishing at 18p, a fall in value of a whopping 91 per cent.

Quicksilver is a fracking company in the USA, perhaps market forces will make companies think twice before developing fracking in this country , providing it is not bankrolled by our Government !

johnhoppyParticipantWrexham has a rich industrial heritage with many coal mines, steel/iron works, breweries, a railway centre, tannery’s…now all long gone. Are we saying now that mineral extraction and industry is fine as long as it is somewhere else, or do we wish to go back to the age of the horse and cart. If the protesters had been around in the 19th century and had their way there would have been no railways, cars, electricity…the list goes on. Like it or not we have to accept that there will be new technologies of which we are suspicious, and we cant insist that all new development is done elsewhere in the world.

MetalheadParticipant^It’s not a case of it being fine if it’s done somewhere else it’s a case that like many I share the view that it’s inappropriate to carry out this kind of operation in close proximity to populated areas. A recent report deemed The Netherlands to be too small and too densely populated for unconventional gas extraction (hence the ban), I’m honestly failing to see how the UK is any different. The planned extraction point at Borras is about a mile from a housing estate and planned legislation will give IGas automatic permission to drill right underneath it. As a resident of this mentioned area I feel I am perfectly entitled not be happy about this, there is a host of issues present at this location and no guarantees being offered. I’m not a protestor but I do share their view that this needs to be stopped.
