Wrexham Manager Dean Keates has been approached by Walsall to become their new manager, and has reached an agreement to take up the position.

Compensation has been arranged between Wrexham and Walsall, and Keates is not likely to be in charge when Wrexham take on Woking this weekend due to the speed the deal has come about.

The Express and Star have reported late this evening “Sources have told the Express & Star that the former midfielder met with Walsall chiefs yesterday” adding Keates ‘could be unveiled as early as tomorrow’.

Odds on Keates taking the position dropped from 7-1 last night, to even money late this afternoon on some bookmakers.

Walsall are a League One club, so the move is a significant step upwards in the football pyramid for Keates.

Keates was appointed Wrexham manager in October 2016, and was a former captain of the reds playing over 150 games. He is also a Walsall legend, also playing over 150 games for them.
