Wrexham FC sign Historic Adidas Kit Deal
Wrexham FC fans have been waiting with baited breath for an announcement today trailed since the unexpected defeat away at Mansfield (where even the goalkeeper scored against us!).
It has been announced that Wrexham FC have signed a two year kit deal with Adidas.
Wrexham FC chief executive, David Roberts, said: “We are delighted to team up with adidas again, particularly at a time where the club is enjoying a magnificent season. Adidas were our kit suppliers during one of the most successful periods in the club’s history and it seems fitting to announce the deal 34 years after the club won promotion to the Second Division wearing an adidas strip. They are a worldwide brand and have a proven track record for producing high quality sportswear.”
There were rumours that a new ‘foundation date’ was due to be announced today – We did our own research in February and deduced that 1863 was the likely foundation date, however there was a gap in knowledge between the end of the 1860’s until the early 1870’s which needed further research to ensure there was an unbroken ‘line’ that could be traced all the way through. If this was proven, we would see the clubs 150th birthday shortly.
Wrexham fans can now look forward to special kit releases , plus the possible 150th anniversary celebrations – one rumour circulating is that a possible tie against Anderlecht is being explored – Anderlecht being the team Wrexham played in their 1975 adventure in the European Cup Winners Cup and wore the now famous Adidas kit.
The announcement of the new kit deal has come at an opportune time for the club, which was left in a financial mess by previous club owners Geoff Moss and Ian Roberts. The club was sold to fans group the WST with debts and no assets, with the ground being sold to Glyndwr University, and the carpark being redeveloped into student flats which were retained by Mr Moss and Roberts. This was contrary to a leaflet issued to fans promising that the club would always own its own ground, and all profits from any development would go back into the club. Mr Moss and local car dealer Nev Dickens purchased the club, ground and surrounding land from administrators at a time when the club was breaking even. We have reported earlier this month that Mr Dickens appears still to be chasing up money he claims is owed to him by the football club.
This week will see the Wrexham Supporters launch their “Our Club, Our Future” community share issue at the Nick Whitehead Theatre at Glyndwr University at 7.30pm. For more information on the community share issue email [email protected] or call the WST Helpline on 07961 152470 for more information.
With the opportunity to celebrate the clubs history via the Adidas kit memories, unique merchandise to purchase and the upcoming playoffs the ‘feel good factor’ is returning to the club which will help refill the clubs coffers . Hopefully this will underpin the rebuilding of the club, and sustainably ensure its future.
