Wrexham FC Renamed To Wrexham City?
In an article outlining the positive aspects of Wrexham’s bid for city status published in The Leader this week, Leader of the Council Ron Davies mooted the possibility of changing the name of Wrexham FC to “Wrexham City”.
Commenting on the council’s bid for city status he said: “It wouldn’t cost us a lot of money and, who knows, we might even be able to call the local football club Wrexham City.”
However, his suggestion has been greeted by a hostile reaction from fans of the club after the article was posted online today.
Commenting on the Leader website one fan wrote “Wrexham City FC? What business is the football club of councillors that did nothing but contribute to its near death?”.
And on Wrexham FC fansite Red Passion another wrote “just shows you how clueless and out of touch they are.”
Wrexham FC and the Racecourse Ground are both highlighted as selling points in the council’s application for city status.
Only recently it was suggested by fans that the club should revert to its old “Wrexham AFC” title, a change which looks to be a possibility after Wrexham Supporters Trust set up a new company called “Wrexham AFC Ltd” on completion of their purchase of the club.
