The board of Wrexham FC has moved to quash media reports which stated that the club did not have sufficient funding to meet its financial liabilities for the season.

A report in yesterday’s Wales on Sunday appeared to suggest that the club may not survive to start next season unless the club’s ‘Red or Dead’ share scheme was a success.

Having read the article this morning, Wrexham defender Mark Creighton took to Twitter to express his concern.

He said: “Just read a lovely piece on walesonline about the future of the club :/ #wowzers”

However, the club’s board moved quickly to calm the player’s fears, in a statement posted on the Wrexham FC website they wrote: “Further to the article carried in yesterday’s ‘Wales On Sunday’, the directors of Wrexham AFC Limited would like to categorically state that the funding is already in place for the club to meet all its financial liabilities for the current season as they fall due.”

Recently instated club CEO David Roberts said: “We have stressed the need to develop a financially sustainable business and that is exactly what we are doing.

“We would not be offering contracts to players if we didn’t have the financial capability to meet those obligations.

“Unfortunately, due to the off the field problems which have beset the football club in recent seasons, supporters read a story such as the one carried in the ‘Wales on Sunday’ and automatically assume the worst.

Mr Roberts added that the club was impressed by the response to the share scheme as well as yesterday’s bumper attendance against AFC Telford: “The Community Share Scheme has not even been launched yet, so for people to have already transferred over £38,000 into the account is an indication of just how much this club means to the local community.

“All our financial planning has been conducted in an extremely prudent manner and so even just doubling that figure would exceed all expectations.

“You only have to look at the gate for yesterday’s match against AFC Telford United to realise the feel good factor which is starting to build around The Racecourse.

“The crowd was 2,200 beyond our budgeted figure and it would be great if we could repeat that on a regular basis.”

In a later tweet Creighton appeared placated by a call from Mr Roberts, he said: “Just had a good phone call from dave roberts, put my mind at ease :) #canenjoymycuppateanow #phewwww”
