Last years Sportsmanship award winner Paul Owen and Gareth Lloyd from Brymbo Sports and Social Complex who sponsored the award.

The clock is ticking for residents to nominate their local sporting heroes for the annual Wrexham County Borough Sports Awards.

The celebrated event aims to recognise sporting talent, effort and enthusiasm at every level from dedicated performance athletes to volunteers who make up the backbone of local sport.

Last year’s event saw local motorcycle rider Paul Owen pick up the Sportsmanship Award for his efforts at the Isle of Man TT tournament.

Paul was following his close friend New Zealander Paul Dobbs on the track during the Supersport 2 Race.

Paul Dobbs suffered a fatal accident during the course and heroically Mr Owen dismounted and assisted the marshals in controlling the incident.

In doing so Mr Owen gave up his own race ambitions and also withdrew from the TT Zero Electric bike race.

His is one of many stories and efforts recognised by the Wrexham Sports Awards across 13 categories:

Disability Sports Personality of the Year
Service to Sport Award
Junior and Senior Volunteer of the Year Award
Primary School Achievement Award
Secondary School Achievement Award
Sportsmanship Award

Last year’s Sportsmanship award winner, Paul Owen said: “Wrexham Sports Awards is a great opportunity for anybody involved with sport to receive the recognition they deserve. I was delighted to receive the Sportsmanship Award at last year’s ceremony and I wish this year’s nominees the very best of luck.”

Cllr Bob Dutton OBE, Lead Member for Communities and Performance said: “Wrexham Council is committed to providing opportunities for people to be physically active and join developed sporting club structures where their talents can be progressed. The Wrexham Sports Awards are definitely an occasion to celebrate talent and enthusiasm particularly in an Olympic year.”
