North Wales Cricket League Round Up – 25th May

Marchwiel-Wrexham, Llay Welfare and Gresford all recorded wins this weekend to leave them occupying three of the top four spots in Division One behind early pace-setters Bangor.

Marchwiel recorded their 4th win of the season after a stunning spell of seam bowling from Anthony Morris saw Buckley bowled out for just 82. Morris, who has represented Denbighshire, removed three Buckley batsmen for ducks to finish with figures of 5-18 from 10 overs. He was well supported by Ahmed Ali, who removed Buckley’s top scorer Jehan Yathugoda, to finish with figures of 4-20. Ali’s haul took his season’s tally to 14 and is a major reason the Wrexham club find themselves sitting in 2nd place. Morris then struck 41 as Marchwiel passed Buckley’s total in the 20th over to record a 7 wicket win.

Llay Welfare bounced back from last weeks defeat with a ruthless display against Pontblyddyn 2nds. Batting first Pont’ suffered a major setback, losing experienced opener Phil Davies without scoring. Llay’s seamers kept things tight, but the introduction of spin triggered a collapse for the Flintshire outfit. Jamie Beale with figures of 5-18 from 11 overs strangled the Pont’ innings. Together, with Dave Phennah (2-19) the Llay slow bowlers limited Pont’ to 79 all out. Llay wasted no time in their reply, Michael Palletta (54no) and Phennah (25no) saw the home side over the finishing line after 9 overs. Llay sit in 4th place with a game in hand.

Gresford sit one place above Llay after a double blow from Paddy Richards triggered a batting collapse against Menai Bridge. Chasing 150 to win, Bridge lost opener John Davies in the first over. Richards then struck twice to remove Paul Lucas and skipper Andy Skeoch. This proved a crucial blow as John Bell 2-16 and Simon Perry 4-20 made light work of the lower order. Earlier, Gresford captain Chris Ellwood top scored with 41 as Gresford were bowled out for 149 in the 45th over.

The division’s other Wrexham side, Chirk, travelled to top of the table Bangor. After electing to bat, Chirk would have been delighted with the efforts of Gareth Partridge who struck a fine 94. Mark Shaw added 54 to take Chirk to 207 for 9 declared of their 45 overs. Partridge’s day was not done as he did further damage to the hosts with the ball, returning figures of 4-49. Jonathan Phillips took 3-46 to ensure a tight finish. David Winter hit 25 not out in a crucial last wicket partnership to give Bangor the win in what was a thrilling encounter.

In the Premier Division Brymbo faced the difficult task of traveling to Llandudno. Llandudno, North Wales champions in 5 out of the last 6 seasons, were in no charitable mood as they raced to 260 for 8 off 49 overs. Duncan Midgeley hitting 13 boundaries on the way to a run a ball 86. Ben Roberts and Benjamin Hilliard shared 6 wickets for Brymbo. Brymbo lost Ed Parry and David Broderick early, but rebuilt through Joss Roberts (46). 80-2 became 83-5 as Llandudno turned the screw. Brymbo made the hosts work for their win as they hung on into the 56th over being bowled out for 181.

In Division 3, Bersham moved to the top of the table with a fine all round performance from Suresh De Silva. De Silva took 3-18 from 12 overs in a controlled spell to restrict Ruthin to 138 all out. The other wickets were shared out amongst the Bersham bowlers in a well-disciplined display. De Silva then took Apart the Ruthin attack with an excellent 82 not out to seal a 6 wicket win.

Gwersyllt hosted Hawarden Park 2nds in a competitive encounter. Gwersyllt seamer Ian Pearson took 5 wickets as Hawarden posted 155 off their 45 overs. James Crowe (2-33) and Jake James (3-30) accounted for 5 of the Hawarden top 6 batsmen to set up a run chase Gwersyllt would feel confident in chasing. It was not to be for Gwersyllt, as they lost dangermen Pearson and Darren Jones early on. James top scored with 36 as Hawarden truimphed by 33 runs. for a 7-3 points split.

Division 3 saw Brymbo 2nds defeat a young Llay Welfare 2nds team. Six Brymbo players reached double figures on their way to 180-9 off 45 overs. Youngster Jacob Roberts with 3-42 off 12 overs the pick of the Llay attack. In a similar pattern to the Brymbo innings, the Llay batsmen got starts but failed to kick on. Andrew Patterson taking 4-9 and Sathisa Perera ensuring a 56 run win for Brymbo.

James Williams was in the wickets for Gresford 2nds as his 5-23 ensured a comfortable 6 wicket victory over St.Asaph. Chris Mullock followed up last weeks 50 with 41 to see Gresford home. In Division Four, Marchwiel 2nds were bowled out for 87 at home to Buckley, who passed their total 1 wicket down.
