Thursday 15th November saw Ysgol Rhiwabon hold their 7th annual fund-raising quiz for Marie Curie Cancer Care. 14 teams aimed for the 3 prizes on offer, donated – along with a vast array of raffle prizes – by local businesses. The event was won by the team of We’re With Truck, five former pupils of the school (two of whom are currently staff members), but more importantly raised over £470 for the charity.

Fran Robinson, a registered nurse with Marie Curie, was quick to thank the school for hosting the event, saying “My association with the school goes back 7 years, they’ve raised around £3500 for us and it’s by far my favourite fund-raising event. It’s lovely to see the school and the charity so well-supported. Marie Curie Cancer Care nurses provide hands-on care to terminally ill people in their own home at no cost to the patients, so we rely very heavily on fund-raising events like this one.”

Alun Harding, the recently-appointed headteacher at the school who Wrexham.com interviewed earlier this term, said “It’s really important that the school supports events like this and is at the centre of what’s going on in the community. Cancer touches so many people’s lives that anything we can do to help support the work done by Marie Curie is very important.”

Vanessa Wright, one of the winning team, modestly said after the event “It doesn’t matter about the result, we’re just happy to support the event,” while Dave Thompson, a fellow competitor, added “It was a thoroughly enjoyable quiz, and after all the important thing is that it’s great to see such a large amount of money raised for Marie Curie Cancer Care.”

Quizmaster Mervyn Dean provided Wrexham.com with a copy of the quiz to try ourselves – can you answer the below three questions (without Googling)?

1. Shaggy, Fred, Daphne and Scooby-Doo – who’s missing?
2. In sport, what is 62 feet 10 inches long and 42 inches wide?
3. Which ancestor of Noah is also the size of an oversize champagne bottle holding 6 litres?

You can post your answers in this thread on our forums by clicking here – no prizes though, its just for fun!
