Ysgol Rhiwabon Celebrates European Day of Languages

Ysgol Rhiwabon celebrated the European Day of Languages on Wednesday 26th September by giving students the chance to learn about other cultures and even taste some delicacies from 9 different countries. Flags and displays of common phrases set the atmosphere for the lunchtime activity, and hundreds of students enjoyed the opportunity to learn a little more about different countries.

With tables set up dedicated to Portugal, Spain, Poland, Cyprus, Turkey, Greece, Japan, France, and of course Wales, there was no shortage of things to look at and food to try – but the helpers insisted that youngsters were able to pronounce at least one phrase in the appopriate language. Most people seemed to think it was well worth going to the trouble of learning a phrase in exchange for such food as Greek meatballs, Polish cake, and French crepes, although Andrew in Year 8 was heard to say “Dwi’n casau lava bread!” despite the best efforts of the Welsh teachers to persuade him it was tasty.

The vast majority of students, however, were much more impressed by the treats on offer. Riley of Year 7 greeted us with “Hajime mashite”, which he told us meant “Pleased to meet you”, before saying that he was “having a really good time” at the event. Over on the Greek table, helper Angelica told us, “It’s been good helping out and I’ve enjoyed sharing my knowledge of the Greek language.”

Staff were also full of praise for organiser Mrs Ffion Paull, Curriculum Leader for Modern Languages, with Assistant Headteacher Mr Huw Phillips saying, “C’est tres bon!” before switching to English to tell us that “The children are very happy.” Mrs Sharon Cooper, Curriculum Leader for Media, added the comment “Wunderbar!” while Mrs Paull herself said, “I’m very pleased with how well the event has gone, and I hope to extend it to something even bigger and better next year.” She also thanked the students who’d helped out, and parents who in many cases had made the food as they were keen to share their culture with their children’s friends.
