The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport students recently organised the successful Wrexham Secondary School Sports Festival at Glyndwr University to run alongside the theme of the Olympic Legacy and positively encourage school children to take part in physical activity.

Aiming to encourage secondary school children in the region to become more active as well as getting them involved in some of the Olympic sports from London 2012 – the festival included mixed 8/9 aside hockey, 7 aside football and 5 aside basketball.

As part of their sports programme, BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sports students at Yale College are encouraged to plan and include sports events to increase participation levels in the Wrexham area.  The programme is designed to improve and encourage sports in the region and contribute to a wider understanding of activity benefits for improving health in secondary schools.

“We would like to include even more sports to the event in the future such as tag rugby and even golf,” says Delyth Sharples, Sports lecturer at Yale College.

“We are proud of our sports students who are setting a fine example and advocating the benefits of sporting activities to their secondary school peers,” says Jasbir Dhesi Principal at Yale College.
