Wrexham’s popular ornamental sheep are set to return next month with an expanded and brightly coloured flock.

In November 2015 Wrexham.com reported that plans were underway to launch a Wrexham Sheep trail across the county borough, with local businesses across the area encouraged to sponsor their very own fibreglass sheep.

To commemorate the launch of the trail, a special ‘photo op’ featuring all the sheep and their new guardian, Pete the Sheepdog will take place on Chester Street in March.

It is hoped that the Wrexham Sheep will be a part of the ‘Year of Adventure’ event which is taking place across Wales during 2016.

Speaking about the flock at yesterday’s Town Centre Forum Meeting, Town Centre Manager Isobel Garner said: “All the sheep are out and an artist in residence is working with the different businesses and schools who have contributed to the sheep.

“The sheep trail will launch on March 26th and they will be coming together in the flock with their sheepdog on Chester Street. Then they will go off on the trail, with a map encouraging people to visit them.”

Wrexham’s Sheep have become somewhat infamous in the town centre since August 2015, when the flock consisting of Doris, Blessing and Wheely Good Sheep, Champion and Jack Mary Ann rocked up to overlook the Tour of Britain cyclists as they rode into the town centre.

However Wrexham’s sheep have fallen victim to to some sheepish crimes, along with several incidents of theft and vandalism resulting in the sheep being moved to a ‘safe location’ back in October.

More recently Champion, who was stolen at the start of October was found on top of Dinas Bran, Llangollen. Due to its travels across Wrexham, Champion looks set to become the ‘Ambassador for Adventure’ in Wrexham next year!

Concerns have previously been raised on how similar sheep related thefts will be stopped when the sheep go their separate ways across the county. In last month’s Town Centre Forum Meeting it was noted that ‘lessons had been learnt’ and that the sheep will more than likely be filled with concrete. Also unlike the previous flock on St Giles, many of the sheep will be owned by local businesses and therefore will be on private land.

The Wrexham Sheep Trail will launch in town on Saturday March 26th. It’s something ewe’d be baaarmy to miss!
