Wrexham’s Peregrine Falcons Relocated & ‘Happy at New Home’
With planning proposals submitted for the relocation of Wrexham’s divisional police station, many have questioned what has happened to the peregrine falcons who lived on the police tower roof.
Last week Wrexham.com reported that plans for Wrexham’s new divisional headquarters had been released with the development consisting of a modern, 32-cell custody suite.
Along with concerns regarding the impact the relocation of the station will have on town centre response times, another question that keeps popping up is ‘What has happened to Wrexham’s Peregrine Falcons?’ – with many querying if the birds were to be rehoused prior to the demolition of the town centre police station.
Peregrine falcons are the largest British breeding falcon with a wingspan of 95-110cm (37-43in). The falcons have become synonymous with the Wrexham police station, having lived on top of the building for the past few years. There was even a ‘Falcon Cam’ set up on the North Wales Police website for people to watch the falcon’s eggs hatch back in 2012.
In recent years many peregrine falcons have made the move to urban high rise buildings, with Wrexham Police Station being suitably high up for them to nest.
Back in 2012 Wrexham.com reported that due to the then rumoured demolition of the police station, members of RSPB (Royal Society For The Protection of Birds) ‘insisted’ that the rare birds were rehoused before any demolition commenced. It is believed that the falcons were moved to an alternative location last year, around the time that the demolition of the Wrexham Police Station had been announced
When quizzed on the relocation of the peregrine falcons today, Town Centre Inspector Paul Wycherely told Wrexham.com: “The safety of the birds was high in our priorities and we moved their nesting box to an alternative location.
“I can confirm they are in a new home in a town centre location. They were checked last week and they are happy in their new home.”
