Wrexham’s Foodbank sees 34% rise in people needing support

There has been a 34 per cent increase in the number of requests for support from the Wrexham Foodbank.

The facility, based at Felin Puleston, provides much-needed food packages and help to residents in need across the area.

This has risen since the start of the cost-of-living crisis, which has forced many people to choose between heating and eating due to inflation and rising energy prices.

Wrexham Foodbank has now thanked local residents for their donations and for making sure as many people as possible receive support.

Foodbank trustee Suzanne Nantcurvis says: “We always welcome donations and promise to use them in the best way possible to help people in crisis.

“We often post updates on our Facebook page about items that are most needed, and we’re grateful to everyone who shares our updates, and donates food where they can.

“Some weeks we might find we need more tinned items like rice pudding, soup or tomatoes, and other weeks we might need more fruit juice, long-life milk or packets of biscuits.

“Given that we’ve seen a 34 per cent increase in the number of requests for our support, we truly appreciate the donations we receive as we are committed to supplying appropriate food parcels to individuals and families in need at this difficult time.”

As well as food, the charity also provides people with toiletries and other non-food essentials.

Mrs Nantcurvis says: “Things like shampoo, soap, washing detergent and baby nappies can be unaffordable for many people struggling to make ends meet, but they’re no less essential.

“So we regularly appeal for these kinds of items through our Facebook page and appreciate any donations that people can give.”

Last year Wrexham Council set-up a special cross-party working group to support local communities through the cost of living crisis, and the council has been working closely with the food bank.

Councillor David A Bithell, who chairs the group, said: “We’ve supported the foodbank with £70k in funding over the past 12 months, and it’s money well spent.

“The cost of living crisis is still very real and affecting households across Wrexham and the rest of the UK.

“Foodbanks play a key role in helping to ensure people can still put nourishing meals on the table during difficult times, and they’re proving to be a real lifeline.
