Wrexham Town Police Station FC to play its first cross border fixture

Officers in Wrexham Town Police Station FC are to play their first game outside of the town next month.

Three fixtures have already been played against Wrexham-based community sides as part of the team’s new ongoing engagement initiative, which began earlier this year.

Friendlies against Bellevue FC, Yellow and Blue, and Wrexham Inclusion have already proved successful and helped the police side to forge stronger links with the Wrexham community.

Building on from the early success of the project, the club will now play against the fundraising team from Hospice Of The Good Shepherd.

The facility provides quality specialist palliative and end of life care for the people, relatives and carers in the Chester and Deeside area.

Sgt Dave Smith is delighted with the initiative’s progress and gave an update on its progress to date.

“I’m really pleased that the staff at The Good Shepherd reached out to us to get this fixture arranged,” he said.

“They do a great job in raising much-needed funds for an organisation that does so much positive work for the people in need of their services.

“They also have a good football side who play friendly matches regularly, so it’s going to be a real challenge for our players.

“When we started out with this initiative in January, we had to be proactive in seeking out community sides from Wrexham to play against us.

“It seems that we’re now reaching the wider community and that clubs are now approaching us to get games arranged.

“That’s great from our point of view, because from the outset this project has been about breaking down barriers between the public and police officers, and about building lasting friendships.

“It’s great because the more games we play – the further the reach of our message.”

The latest match will be played in Chester on Saturday, April 9, with Sgt Smith also praising the FAW for their help in in the initiative’s early stages.

“Getting the use of Colliers Park for our first three matches was massive and the FAW were brilliant in helping us get off the ground”, he added.

“Now we’ll be looking to travel to different grounds and to play other clubs, particularly in and around Wrexham to keep this initiative going.”
