Students from Coleg Cambria Yale have won the Wales finals of the global competition to find the next generation of entrepreneurs after a three-day challenge in Cardiff.

Over 6,000 young people from throughout Wales have taken part in the Global Entrepreneurship Challenge finals which culminated with 125 youngsters from 19 colleges in North, Mid and South Wales taking part at The Urdd Centre and Cardiff City Stadium.

During the two days they worked in teams to put their entrepreneurial skills to the test, turning ideas into action and preparing a business plan and associated marketing and to pitch their idea to a panel of entrepreneurs.

With a theme on tourism, the team from Coleg Cambria came up with a business idea for Selfie Search, a platform for tourists from all over the UK to upload selfies at Welsh attractions.

Deputy Minister for Culture, Tourism and Sport, Ken Skates, added: “Entrepreneurship is a key driver for the Welsh economy and research tells us more young people in Wales are considering starting their own business.

“Whether it’s a hobby that can be turned into a business or an idea that has enterprise potential, by having the right mentoring and information, many young people in Wales can start their own businesses and become Wales’ next top entrepreneurs.”

Alessandro Palette from the winning team at Coleg Cambria’s Yale campus, said: “It’s been a great experience since we entered the challenge. From the regional finals to here in Cardiff, we have learned a great deal about business and enterprise and it’s something we can now use as part of our studies and, hopefully, our careers.”
