Licensees in Wrexham have been commended for providing a safe night out following surprise inspections by Police, Trading Standards and Environmental Health Officers.

The various stakeholders undertook “Operation Sparkle” recently where every bar and club that was open was visited by them and had their CCTV systems checked to make sure they were working properly and storing footage correctly.

Sampling took place for counterfeit alcohol and advice was given on “legal high” issues.

Licences were checked for Door Staff, spot checks on “proof of age ID” was undertaken and cocaine detection wipes were used in toilets and other areas.

Health and Safety at the premises were checked along with making sure that smoking legislation was being applied.

Wrexham Council have said: “The results showed high levels of compliance.

“All door staff were properly licensed and there were no issues with any CCTV systems or storage.

“Just two premises had minor issues. These have now received advice and an action plan put together to put these right.”

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities Partnerships and Collaboration, said: “The exercise was extremely well performed with all participants giving positive feedback on the operation.

“The results were excellent and all licensees can be very proud of themselves at such a high level of compliance.

“Night time visitors to the town centre will be reassured that licensed premises are trading with the customers welfare and safety in mind.

“I would like to thank everyone involved with Operation Sparkle and encourage all to enjoy the excellence of what our Town Centre has to offer.”
