The Wrexham Disability Football Club recently celebrated a remarkable birthday.

The club, which was set up five years ago, supports, develops and enhances the lives of people within, but not limited to, the following areas; disability, mental health, substance misuse, criminal justice, social isolation, homelessness, poverty and many more.

In the past 12 months Wrexham DSA FC has seen a great increase in the work they do in Wrexham, in networking around the United Kingdom, the on-going social media coverage and the number of people they support on a weekly and monthly basis.

Manager Carl Austin said” “To see our club succeed on and off the pitch to the levels we do makes everyone involved very proud.

“We see over 30 service users attend training sessions every single week, and we have recently agreed a contract with the Welsh Football Association to deliver a funded mental health football initiative partnership with the Racecourse Community Foundation, so things are definitely on the up.”

Earlier this year Wrexham DSA FC won one of the biggest disability tournaments in the UK at Lytham St Annes, as well as making final appearances at Lewes and Middlesbrough, having already won six previous mental health and disability tournaments throughout the year.

Next May will see a further achievement for Wrexham DSA when they travel to Munich to become the first Welsh team to compete in one of Europe’s most elite mental health competitions.

Wayne Greenshields project coordinator said: “We still have some way to go to raise the funds but we are confident we can achieve our target. For some players who have never left Wales, to travel to Germany is something they could never have imagined.

“If we can contribute to giving them this opportunity and providing memories for life, then as a club this makes us very proud. Wrexham haven’t scored in Europe since Chris Armstrong score Against Lyngby 1990 so it will be 27 years next year do hopefully we can change that ”

Carl added: “We would like to thank everyone who has supported the club over the last five years including players, coaches, organisations who have sponsored us and other community clubs hosting tournaments and events. Thank you for all your contributions. We look forward to the next 5 years and continued success.”

The club has a number of fundraising events planned in the upcoming months and has also set up a Just Giving page for donations.
