Brymbo Councillor Paul Rogers has blasted the handling of changes to Wrexham Council’s school transport policy.

Children in Tanyfron have traditionally had free transport to Ysgol Bryn Alyn, however as a result of changes which mean transport will only be provided to the nearest suitable school, children going to secondary school in September will only be provided with free transport to Ysgol Clywedog.

Cllr Rogers, who opposed the changes to the policy, has branded the situation a shambles after parents contacted him claiming that the council didn’t tell them that they weren’t eligible for free transport until after they had secured a place at Ysgol Bryn Alyn.

“The situation is a shambles and frustrating for many parents in my community and others across Wrexham” he said.

“When the policy was changed it should have been made explicitly clear how this would have affected communities.

“Parents and schools have not been told until the 11th hour how these changes would impact them.

“Children already attending Ysgol Bryn Alyn will continue to benefit from free school transport however from September parents of children leaving primary school will now be forced to pay £50 to send them there. This is removing parental choice in education from poorer families across Wrexham.”
