Wrexham Council gives update on cafe access at during Butchers Market refurb

Wrexham Council has issued an update on access to the only remaining trader currently situated at the Butchers Market as it undergoes refurbishment.

The multi-million-pound revamp of the Grade II Listed Butchers and General Markets in the city centre started earlier this year and has seen most traders move to units on Queens Square.

Initially, Tracey’s Café and GC Hughes Butchers planned to remain at the Butchers Market as the work took place.

However, GC Hughes Butcher announced that they would close at the end of September 2023 amid the building works at the market, leaving just Tracey’s Café the only business still based there as the works take place.

Wrexham Council took to social media today (Thursday, November 30) to issue an update to the access of the café from next week.

The post said: “Due to ongoing refurbishment works, from Wednesday 6th December, access to Tracey’s Café based at the Butchers Market will be Via Henblas Street where a temporary ramp will have been installed.”

The refurbishment of the markets is part of Wrexham Townscape Heritage Scheme plans that looks to improve and develop the Wrexham City Centre Conservation Area.

The project aims to bring significant improvements to both the butchers and general market halls which are at the heart of Wrexham city centre Conservation Area.

It also forms part of the Wrexham Townscape Heritage Scheme, funded through the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Welsh Government – Transforming Towns Fund, and Wrexham Council’s capital programme.

Both are historic to Wrexham with the Butcher’s Market being opened in 1848 and the General Market in 1879.
