A new college facility for pupils with autism and Asperger’s syndrome has opened in Wrexham.

Having outgrown its former home at King Street, Priory Coleg North Wales has moved to a new site at Ty Dewi Sant on Rhosddu Road, following a £50,000 investment.

Wrexham Assembly Member Lesley Griffiths attended the official opening by North Wales-born actress Nerys Hughes, best known for her role in the BBC series The Liver Birds.

Parents, carers and representatives of Careers Wales, Coleg Cambria and schools and hospitals in the region were also present at the ceremony.

Priory Coleg North Wales is a specialist co-educational facility for students aged 16-25 with Asperger’s syndrome and associated conditions.

The majority of learners at Priory Coleg are on full-time courses at Coleg Cambria, receiving in-class support from Priory Coleg such as specialist teaching and speech and language therapy.

By providing the extra support, Priory Coleg believes its students will be better prepared for adulthood, empowering individuals into making their own choices and optimising their independent living skills.

After the official opening, Lesley Griffiths AM said: “Priory Coleg is an excellent facility which provides invaluable support to young people in Wrexham.”

“People with autism and Asperger’s syndrome can make valuable contributions to society and the extra support provided by the college enables its students to reach their full potential.”
