Wrexham Carers Service have announced their plans for Carers Week 2012.

Carers Week runs from the 18th-22nd June and highlights the vital work done by those who provide unpaid care to either an adult or child who is ill, frail or disabled.

This year, the theme for the week is “in sickness and in health” which questions the impact of care on carer’s health and questions if the cuts to services from statutory agencies and government will make them shoulder more of the burden.

Marie Gibson of Wrexham Carers Service said: “Many carers in Wrexham suffer due to a lack of understanding about what they do, some don’t even recognise themselves as carers. This can have a real and negative impact on their health, finances, working/social life, and general wellbeing.

“These events are just one part of the many activities and services that Wrexham Carers Service provides to support carers in Wrexham. I would urge anybody caring for someone to contact us to find out what support is available to them.”

This year’s Carers Week is supported by many famous celebrities with caring experience including Dame Judi Dench, Graham Norton, and Sir David Jason.

Sir David Jason said: “I am very happy to offer my support to all the carers out there who give of their time and efforts so generously. Sometimes the role of a carer can be a very hard and lonely one and Carers Week is a time when hopefully a carer doesn’t feel quite so alone.”

There will be a variety of information events across the week to raise awareness of the issues carers face including the Big Health Day Tuesday 19th June and information stands at Wrexham Maelor and Chirk Hospital on Thursday 21st.

An event will also be held to raise awareness of young adult carers on Queens Square on Wednesday 20th. Another important part of Carers Week is encouraging carers to take time out from their caring role and a number of social events have been organised including trips to Chirk Castle and Llandudno along with therapies, a male carer event and an evening summer buffet.
