A Wrexham-based organisation is helping to improve peoples’ quality of life with its innovative response to falls prevention for the over 65s.

‘Active Futures’, run by The Rainbow Foundation in Penley, is an exercise programme involving strength, balance, and functional exercises.

It was launched to help reduce falls in as in the over 65s. ‌

One third of people over 65 experience a fall at least once a year, rising to 50% for those over 80.

From the age of 40 to 70, our muscle mass decreases by approximately 8% per decade and after 70 years that rate increases to 15% per decade.

Sessions include a physiotherapist led exercise class followed by an opportunity to socialise with the group and access lifestyle and wellbeing support from their community wellbeing advisor.

They are delivered at the right intensity for each individual.

The programme has already had positive results for its clients, with Julia explaining that it has helped to improve her quality of life.

Julia said: “I was in a lot of pain. I was having to use sticks and I was falling.

“I’d seen a surgeon and he said I needed multiple surgeries. I came on [The Rainbow Foundation’s] 12 week programme and I was really impressed.

“I have increased confidence, I’m mobile again, no sticks in sight.

“Even the consultant, was absolutely amazed by how quickly I recovered.”

Active Futures has been commissioned by GP Practices across Wrexham, recognising the importance of staying active and maintaining balance and strength as we age if we are to reduce frailty in the community and related hospital admissions.

Cost to the NHS of falls is estimated to be more than £2.3 billion per year.

Ian Pope, Director of Operations at the Rainbow Foundation said: “100% of participants improved during the programme not only decreasing the time they took to complete activities but also making significant improvements to their stamina, confidence, and overall feelings of wellbeing.

“All participants also reported a reduction in concerns and anxiety around falls and mobility.’

‘This is why we are thrilled to be able to roll out our Active Futures programme to residents across Wrexham.

“Keeping active improves our mind, cognitive function and our immune system making it easier to fight off infections.

“By taking some simple measures, people can stay healthy and maintain their independence as they age.”

The Active Futures programme is free and held over 12 weeks, offering 2 group sessions a week.

The programme formally starts week commencing 6 November and is running at four venues: the Rainbow Centre in Penley, Piercy Hall in Marchwiel, Acton Park Resource Centre and Chirk Parish Hall.

To book your place call the Rainbow Foundation on 01948 830730 or email [email protected] direct.

The programme is open to residents aged 65 and over, who are registered with a Wrexham GP.
