The Association of Voluntary Organisations in Wrexham (AVOW) will be celebrating 25 years their existence and also the past 150 years of volunteering in Wrexham County Borough.

To celebrate AVOW will be holding a commerorative event. This year the event will take place in Glyndwr University’s William Aston Hall on 22nd November 2013.

During the past 150 years volunteers have played a major part in the life of Wrexham establishing schools, hospitals, assisting in major events such as the Gresford Colliery disaster and both First and Second World Wars.

Age is not a barrier to volunteering and many people have remained fit and active by taking part in a wide variety of activities. Volunteering is at the heart of our communities and many activities would never take place if it was not for the dedication of people prepared to freely give their own time freely for the benefit of others.

John Gallanders, AVOW’s Chief Officer said: “To celebrate AVOW’s Silver Jubilee we are holding a celebration event with songs, music and dance from over the years. We are particularly interested in identifying anyone over the age of 90 who is still volunteering so that we can send them a special invitation to the event to recognise all the years they have given time freely for the benefit of others in Wrexham County Borough.”

Funds raised from the celebration will go to the AVOW MAD (Make a difference) grant scheme that has a target to raise £10,000 to be distributed to local voluntary and community organisations at the end of the year.

If anyone would like to make a donation to the MAD Grant Fund please send to AVOW 21 Egerton Street, Wrexham, LL11 1ND or you can text AVOW00 plus either 5 or 10 (for your donation value) to 70070 or visit www.justgiving.com/AVOW-MAD-Grant .

Details of volunteers over 90 should be sent to John Gallanders at AVOW giving name, contact details and where the person is volunteering at the moment. Email [email protected]
