Local residents have the chance to visit a renovated walled garden, which is providing meaningful work as well as social and educational opportunities for disabled adults in Wrexham.

The Erlas Victorian Walled Garden is aiming to expand and develop further, with several open days and evenings taking place from this week encouraging people to visit the community hub for themselves.

Wrexham’s Assembly Member Lesley Griffiths is a patron of the charity and recently visited the garden to discuss future plans with the members.

Located on Bryn Estyn Road, the Erlas Victorian Walled Garden is a charitable organisation, led by a dedicated team of volunteers. The project helps promote the health, well-being and development of people with a variety of disabilities by providing meaningful activities, education, training and work experience.

The charity has ambitious plans to widen its scope, bringing together a wide range of beneficiaries to become a major community resource. Part of its plans to expand have resulted in the charity bidding for £1.2m of Big Lottery funding, via the ‘Create Your Space’ scheme.

Lesley said: “The enthusiasm and hard work of the gardeners and volunteers at the Erlas Victorian Walled Garden has transformed this once derelict piece of land into a thriving community hub.

“Over the years, it has been a pleasure to witness the on-going success of the project. I have seen on many occasions just how valued it is by the students, offering them the chance to gain confidence and engage in a range of activities, such as horticulture, woodworking and nature conservation.

“The open days and evenings offer the ideal opportunity for local residents to visit the garden and people will be able to see for themselves the enormous potential of the project.

The open days and evenings are taking place at the following times:

Monday 24 October – 4 – 6pm

Tuesday 25 October – 4 – 6pm

Wednesday 26 October – 4 – 6pm

Saturday 29 October – 10 – 12am

All are welcome and light refreshments will be served.
