Two Wrexham schools removed from Estyn review requirement list after positive follow up

Two local secondary schools have received positive feedback by Estyn – the education and training inspectorate for Wales.

Both Darland High School in Rossett and The Maelor School in Penley recently underwent follow-up reviews after being inspected back in 2019.

Estyn has now published a letter on both Darland and the Maelor School with a judgement is that both schools have addressed the recommendations that were made, and the need for further review is no longer required, noting for both: “The school has been removed from the list of schools requiring Estyn review. There will be no further monitoring activity in relation to this inspection”

Councillor Phil Wynn, Wrexham Council’s Lead Member for Education commented: “This is positive news and reflects well on the quality education provision both these schools are providing their pupils.

“With all the challenges that all schools have faced over the last year due to the pandemic, it is pleasing to know that the efforts of the staff at both schools hasn’t gone unrecognised by Estyn.”

Simon Ellis, Headteacher at The Maelor School, said: “We’re really pleased that the hard work and dedication of our teaching staff has been recognised, and we’re rapidly developing a reputation for our high-quality teaching and learning methods.”

Joanne Lee, Headteacher at Darland, added: “We are delighted with this recent report. Darland High School has seen significant improvements over the last two years which Estyn has recognised.

“I would like to congratulate the staff and governors for their hard work and team ethos.

“I would also like to thank parents for their support. The last year has seen unusual times, and for us to make such progress during this time is testament to the dedication and energy of all involved.”
