Town Centre Road Closures Planned For Upcoming Tour of Britain

This Sunday will see Wrexham host Stage 1 of the Tour of Britain – which will see the likes of Mark Cavendish and Sir Bradley Wiggins cycle into the town.

As a result of such a large scale event there are a large number of road closures in and around the town centre throughout the day, along with rolling road closures as the cyclists pass through points of the county.

A statement issued by Wrexham Council reads: “Wrexham County Borough Council is coordinating with North Wales Police and the race organisers on traffic management measures to keep competitors, spectators and other road users safe during the race. People’s enthusiasm, patience and cooperation will be needed in order to make the event a success. We aim to make it a great day and to minimise any disruption to normal road use.”

The full list of road closures and parking prohibition are listed below:

Yorke Street and Chester Street ( up to the roundabout with Powell Road ) will be closed to all vehicular traffic between the hours of 4.00am and 7.00pm

Tuttle Street will be closed between the hours of 4.00am and 7.00pm. However, access to residential properties and St Giles public car park will be maintained up to 1.00pm

Brook Street and St Giles Way will be closed between the hours of 2.00pm and 3.45pm

The riders are expected to enter the County on the A541 Mold to Wrexham road at between 2.50pm and 3.14pm and will proceed along the following route to the finish line on Chester Street, Wrexham, arriving at between 3.00pm and 3.25 p.m. These arrival times are estimated and are obviously dependent upon the speed of the riders :-

A 541 Mold Road to Gwersyllt.
Bear left onto High Street, Gwersyllt.
Dodd’s Lane, Gwersyllt.
Right on the B5424 Llay New road, Rhosrobin, towards Wrexham town centre.
Rhosddu Road
Grosvenor Road
Right onto Regent Street and left onto Bradley Road.
Watery Road
Pentre Felin
Brook Street
St Giles Way
Tuttle Street
Yorke Street
Chester Street (finish line near the entrance to the library car park)

In addition to the road closures detailed above, (Brook Street, St Giles Way, Tuttle Street, Yorke Street and Chester Street), the remainder of the route in the County will be subject of ‘rolling; road closures around the anticipated time of arrival of the race.

Although the race passes quickly, there is an accompanying convoy of team cars and organisers’ vehicles. This is managed by a ‘rolling road block’ where the race route, and junctions with access roads onto the route, are closed while the race passes through.

The length of closure of the rolling road block depends upon how dispersed the riders are. Typically, the lead motorcycle instigating the closure is 15 minutes ahead of the lead rider. The closure then remains in place until all riders and race cars have passed through. The simplest advice is to look at the route of the race and avoid that road for about one hour either side of the predicted time of the race passing through.

The race organisers require the route to be clear of parked vehicles. Please see details above of the times of road closures for Brook Street, St Giles Way, Tuttle Street, Yorke Street and Chester Street. All vehicles must be removed from these streets prior the relevant closure times.

In addition, all other roads listed above within the County from the A541 Mold Road, through to Pentre Felin must be clear of parked vehicles no later than 12.00 noon, until such time as the race has passed through. Any vehicle left unattended on any of these roads after 12.00 noon may be removed and taken to a secure compound, where a fee will need to be paid for its release.
