Three wards at the Maelor remain closed to admissions as the staff fight off the Norovirus outbreak with deep cleaning ongoing.

Three wards at Wrexham Maelor Hospital are still closed to admissions with three further wards with partial restrictions but it is expected that two of these will have reopened overnight or some point this morning after a deep clean process is completed.

Twenty one patients have displayed symptoms of Norovirus over the last two days, a reduction on previous numbers.

Chirk Hospital has now re-opened, however new possible cases have been admitted into Deeside Hospital and admissions are suspended into the Gladstone Ward.

Staff at Wrexham Maelor Hospital continue to ask people to help support efforts to control the current outbreak of Norovirus by not coming to the hospital if they have had diarrhoea or vomiting in the previous two days.

A spokesperson said: “Thanks to the strenuous efforts of a wide range of staff, the spread of the virus in the Hospital is being limited, and the deep clean teams have been working hard to make sure wards can be safely reopened after patients have recovered.”

“However patients do continue to come into our emergency department because they have diarrhoea or have been vomiting.

“Unless people have other underlying health problems, Norovirus is not a condition that needs hospital attention. There is no treatment for the illness; although the symptoms are unpleasant people will generally make a full recovery within a few days.

“The best advice during this time is for people to stay at home, keep drinking fluids so they don’t get dehydrated, and to telephone their GP or NHS Direct for further advice. Advice should always be sought from a doctor for more vulnerable people such as the very young, the elderly or people with other health conditions such as diabetes.”

The first issues around Norovirus at the Maelor began earlier this month with 38 people being affected at its (hopefully) peak last week.
