A ‘fantastic and well looked after’ sheltered housing scheme in Wrexham has celebrated its 25th birthday.

Tenants and staff at Valley Court in Brynteg, which opened in 1992, marked the occasion with a special party and buffet, attended by the Mayor, Cllr John Pritchard.

The scheme contains 22 self-contained flats, as well as social and communal rooms. A warden service is available to the tenants and regular social events such as Bingo nights and coffee mornings are also held.

Valley Court tenant, Mrs Gladys Barlow, said “We’ve had a lovely morning catching up with everyone. It’s a very comfortable place to live and the staff and other tenants are always very friendly. We all get on well and enjoy all the social events. 25 years is still quite young really.”

Local Member for New Broughton, Cllr Alan Edwards, said: “It’s been lovely to meet and chat with the tenants here. This is a fantastic and well looked after scheme and it’s obvious that the tenants are very comfortable and enjoy living here.

“It’s still a very modern building by today’s standard and it still looks in great condition.

“Tenants here have also been receiving new kitchens and bathrooms as part of the work being carried out to achieve the Welsh Housing Quality Standard so it’s good to know the building is being made fit for the future.”

Lead Member for Housing, Cllr Ian Roberts, said, “I would like to congratulate the staff and tenants at Valley Court for 25 successful years and I’m delighted they have been able to come together to mark the occasion.

“The 22 council run sheltered housing schemes that we look after across the County Borough provide a valuable housing option for many people when they reach retirement age. Tenants are able to keep their independence but also have access to a warden service and social events.

“It is important that we keep maintaining these facilities to ensure they are comfortable, modern and desirable for our tenants so I’m very pleased that a number works have been successfully completed here.”
