This morning around 2000 cyclists are taking part in the Etape Cymru cycling event. While it appears its passing off without much incident one sad discovery has been made.

Sgt Mark Jones of North Wales Police said earlier today “We’ve had reports of tacs being placed on the road on the Etape Cymru route. Several cyclists suffering punctures.”

“Approximately 6 cyclists have been affected however they’ve managed to repair. We’ve had to lose one of the safety motorcycle marshalls though”

“We will be investigating. Nobody injured and the event is continuing well.”

He described the find as “Very disappointing.”

An hour later more tacks / nails where found, with the areas affected being by ‘Cock Bank’, Wrexham and near Pentrecelyn, Ruthin.

In 2011 there was an issue with signage being delibarately sabotaged around Wrexham, causing several hundred cyclists to go the wrong way (report here).

In better news it appears that the weather is great for todays event and local residents are now into the swing of the road closures with less complaints around that we can see!
