Students across Wrexham are celebrating this morning after finding out the results of their AS and A-Level.

It’s been a difficult few years for students who have seen their studies disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.

A-level and AS Levels exams and assessments took place this year with extra support being provided including some advance information of exam content and a supportive grading approach.

This year results are broadly midway between the results awarded in 2019 (the last year before the pandemic) and 2022 (the first year that students sat exams following the pandemic).

Many vocational learners also received their Level 3 results today.

Maelor School Penley

Amongst those receiving their results today are teenagers at the Maelor Sixth in Penley.

Around 40% of all grades awarded were A* or A grades and more than three quarters at A*-C.

100% of students entered for two or more A levels achieved the level 3 threshold (at least two passes).

Achievements include:-

  • Ella Bailey-Rogers – 2A*,2A’s AS-A – will be reading Neuroscience and Psychology at the University of Manchester.
  • Megan Bancroft – 4A*’s AS-A – will be reading Medicine at the University of Birmingham.
  • Issac Smith – 4A*’s 1A – will be studying Computer Science at the University of Bath.
  • Emily Roberts – A*,2A, B – will be studying Physics at St Andrews
  • Ben Evison-Shone A*, 3B – will be studying Chemical Engineering at the University of Nottingham

Director of Sixth Form, Penny Ellwood said “This year group have been an absolute delight to work with, thoroughly dedicated to their studies, enthusiastic about learning and supportive of each other.

“It’s so pleasing to see them achieving the required grades to move on to their university course of choice or higher apprenticeship.”

Headteacher Simon Ellis commented “It should be remembered that this year group missed out on much of year 10 and 11 due to the covid pandemic.

“For them to achieve these outstanding results says a lot about their dedication, resilience, and persistence.

“Whether they were Maelor School pupils from year 7 or those that joined us at 16, they have shown they not only have achieved some superb grades but have developed together those supportive skills that will stay with them throughout their lives.”

Coleg Cambria

Coleg Cambria leaders praised students for rising above post-pandemic challenges to achieve “outstanding and inspirational” A Level and BTEC results.

Chief Executive Yana Williams said overall figures including A*-C grades were “fantastic” and pointed to the resilience of learners in successfully transitioning from secondary school to college during lockdown and going on to successfully complete their studies.

“We are proud of the students, they have risen to overcome the challenges of the last few years and once again demonstrated hard work and a focus to do their very best, with the support of our amazing staff and tutors,” said Ms Williams.

“They have shown great fortitude and managed to secure outstanding and inspirational results across the board.

“We are pleased for them and hope they go on to live full and happy lives, personally and professionally – they will always be part of the Cambria community.”

Principal Sue Price congratulated everyone receiving their grades today (Thursday) and said they look forward to welcoming the next influx of learners to Deeside, Northop, Llysfasi and Wrexham following next week’s GCSE results.

“The students have done brilliantly this year, they are a credit to Coleg Cambria,” said Mrs Price.

“While we reflect on the achievements of our A Level cohorts – who have been magnificent – we also look ahead to the coming months and the pupils joining us from schools across the region.

“On behalf of everyone at Cambria I would like to thank the students, their families and our community for their support and well done again on such an amazing outcome in the face of so many obstacles – we are proud of you all.”

Councillor Phil Wynn, Lead Member for Education, said: “I would like to congratulate pupils on the fantastic results achieved today.

“I would like to thank them all – along with their teachers and parents – for their commitment to their studies, recognising the disruption the pandemic has had on their time in education

“As they go on to the world of work, training or higher education we wish everyone the best of luck and continued success.”

The Minister for Education and Welsh Language, Jeremy Miles, has congratulated learners across Wales as A-level, AS, Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate and vocational qualification learners received their results this morning.

He said: “I want to wish a big congratulations to everyone receiving their results today. It’s a huge day for you, the culmination of years of hard work, and I hope today is a reward for all your efforts.

“We know what a challenging time this has been. Our aim in providing extra support this year was to make sure the exams were fair, despite the difficulties you’ve faced.

“For anyone who didn’t quite get the results you wanted, or you’re unsure of your next steps, don’t be too disappointed and don’t be too hard on yourself. There are lots of options open to you, including university clearing, apprenticeships, maybe starting your own business. Careers Wales is a great place to start for advice and your school or college will be there to support you too.

“Our Young Person’s Guarantee provides everyone under the age of 25 with the opportunity to enrol in education or training, find work or become self-employed, so you have lots of choices to pursue the career you want.

“I hope all staff and students are proud of their hard work, enjoy the rest of the summer and look forward to the exciting opportunities you have ahead of you.”
