Clean up underway after Storm Arwen hits Wrexham area with 60mph winds
UPDATE: The council have said gritting crews are out late this afternoon and again at 2am tomorrow morning due to low temperatures -2 generally across the county borough, a cold night, “Please take extra care if you need to travel on untreated roads or where debris has fallen due to storm Arwen.”
“Our crews are still dealing with a large amount of tree damage across the county borough. We also ask to be carful going to our county parks and we are checking over the weekend for any tree damage. Wrexham Cemetery is closed due to fallen trees as is the crematorium. The clean up will continue today and Sunday ready to resume normal services on Monday.”
UPDATE Saturday Morning: Wrexham Council have given some insight to the large overnight operation to respond to storm damage in the area. Cllr David A Bithell Lead Member Environment and Transport told us, “Our streetscene crews have been out all night, 9 crews, 2 JCBs including additional vehicles dealing with the storm, high winds have caused damage to a number of trees blocking roads, fence panels blown on highways including garden furniture.”
“There are too many areas to name at the present but all calls are being co-ordinated via our call centre.”
“Please be aware that many roads may have debris, large and small branches – some roads may be blocked, please take extra care if you need to travel, weather is expected to ease later this afternoon.”
“Our crews will be out all day today and tomorrow to clean up and make safe our highway network in the county borough.”
They have also said Pentrebychan Crematorium is closed today, and the council also politely request people to *not* go to the country parks today – rangers are out and about checking on trees and sorting issues from the storm. Wrexham Cemetery also closed due to a large damaged tree.
North Wales Police say, “Please avoid travelling if you can this morning. Storm Arwen has resulted in fallen trees, debris and unsafe structures across the region. Strong winds remain so if you have to travel please check your journey beforehand. Our joint control room with North Wales Fire and Rescue Service in St Asaph is extremely busy – please consider whether your call is an emergency or whether you can contact your local council for advice instead.”
Transport for Wales say, “Due to severe weather caused by Storm Arwen, all Transport for Wales Rail services have been suspended. Replacement road transport is unavailable. As a result, customers are advised not to travel.”

Further details from overnight below…
Storm Arwen has hit the Wrexham area uprooting trees and causing power cuts.
Gusts of over 60mph are due through the night – lowering to 45mph by morning – with an Amber wind warning in place until 9am.
North Wales Police said, “Due to the extreme weather conditions across our force area, our Control Room is currently experiencing an extremely high volume of calls, especially to 999, and some delays may be experienced if you are trying to contact us.
“Please consider the best way to speak to us and ONLY dial 999 for emergencies. There are instances of road disruption due to fallen trees across the region, and these type of incidents can be reported to us via our live webchat online or by calling 101.”
Any power outages across the county you can ring 105, which is the fast number for SP Energy Networks, and report them.
