Veteran Standards in Wrexham have been secured for future generations following a successful crowdfunding campaign.

In January Wrexham Council launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds to safeguard the standards of the Eighth Army Vets, the Korean Vets, the Burma Star Vets and the Normandy Vets.

A target of £12,000 was set to secure the future of the standards – with a combination of crowdfunding and traditional fundraising activities (such as bag packing in a local supermarket) used to raise the funds.

After hitting the target, Wrexham Council this week issued a heartfelt thank you to Community Councils, schools, local organisations and individuals who took part and donated to the cause.

The news has been welcomed by Armed Forces Champion, Cllr David Griffiths, who said: “It has been very inspiring to see the support the Veterans Standards have received from individuals of all ages across Wrexham.

“On behalf of all the veterans I would like to say a very heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported this very worthwhile funding appeal. The Standards of the Burma Star, Eighth Army and Korean Vets will be sent to the conservation studio as soon as they can be booked in.

“They will be mounted and framed and put on permanent display at the Guildhall. The Normandy Veterans Standard will follow when the last man standing has passed and it has played its part in a guard of honour.”

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities and Performance, added: “This is a huge achievement by communities, groups and individuals and shows what can be achieved when we work together in Wrexham to preserve what is important now and for future generations.

“Veterans across Wrexham can be proud of everyone who supported this very worthwhile appeal.”
